This page lists every firm the HSE currently licenses in Stoke and Staffordshire for asbestos removal. Staffordshire County Council will take asbestos a householder has removed at five recycling centres, only between 1pm and 3pm. The limit is four sheets no larger than 3 foot by 3 foot, or four 25kg bags, every six months.

Double wrap it in heavy-duty clear polythene and tape it. Do not break it up to make it fit. Traders are refused. Current site names sit on Staffordshire County Council’s asbestos page. Stafford Borough also points householders at the St Albans Road site in Stafford for small amounts of asbestos cement. Read the county page on the day you go. Hours and which five sites are taking it can move.

6 of the 7 hold a standard licence, which is the one that covers removal.

How to read the licensed contractor list for Staffordshire

  • Watch the expiry dates. None of the Staffordshire firms hold a licence expiring in the next 6 weeks.
  • Watch the type. One firm here holds a scaffolding licence, not a removal one: Midland & General Scaffolding Ltd in Rugeley. A scaffolding licence covers putting up and taking down scaffold around asbestos work, not removing anything, so those are not who you ring about a garage roof.

Ask for the licence number and match it to the table. Stoke-on-Trent is a unitary authority. The county tip rules are Staffordshire County Council’s. If your bins are collected by Stoke, check Stoke’s own waste page as well as the county one before you load a car.

1pm to 3pm, four sheets, do not cut them down

The 3 foot by 3 foot limit is why people break sheets. Do not. Broken cement-bonded asbestos is a different job, and the site can refuse it. If the sheet is larger than the limit, it is a contractor and a proper waste route, not a Tuesday afternoon at the tip.

The six-month count is per household. A second car later in the week does not reset it.

Where asbestos turns up in Staffordshire

The Potteries and the market towns are different stocks. Factory and warehouse board in Stoke and around the old industrial sites is licensed work more often than a garage roof in Stafford or Lichfield. Terraces and later infill kitchens still throw up floor tiles and textured coating.

Not every job needs a licensed firm

Four small cement sheets, off whole, wrapped as the county asks, inside the 1pm–3pm window, can be a householder drop. Insulating board, lagging, and anything broken is not that job.

Where the West Midlands sits on mesothelioma

  • West Midlands: 45.8 deaths per million
  • Great Britain as a whole: 55.9

That is the lowest rate of any English region, and well below the North East at 72.6. The regions at the top of the table are the shipbuilding ones, and Staffordshire’s industry was pottery, coal and engineering.

Who is at risk has changed. The HSE says the highest risk today sits with people who worked in the building trades while asbestos was still in use, carpenters, plumbers and electricians. A lower regional rate says nothing about the ceiling in your own house.

Questions about asbestos removal in Staffordshire

Can I come at 10am?

The county page says asbestos is only accepted between 1pm and 3pm at five centres. Read that page before you set off.

My sheets are 8 foot. Can I cut them?

No. If they will not fit the published size, use a firm from the table. Cutting cement-bonded asbestos is how fibres get into the air.

I pay council tax in Stoke. Is this my tip?

Check Stoke-on-Trent’s own waste rules as well as Staffordshire County Council’s. Unitary and county sites are not automatically the same list.

Stoke and the county are not one waste service

Stoke-on-Trent collects its own bins. Staffordshire County Council runs the five-site asbestos window. People in Hanley or Tunstall who follow a Stafford Facebook post will be turned away. Read the page for the council that actually collects your rubbish.

Old factory board in the Potteries is a different quote from four cement sheets in a Cannock garage. The industrial stuff is usually licensed work, an enclosure, and a proper waste facility. Do not try to feed it through the 1pm–3pm household window. That window is for small cement-bonded amounts a householder has already taken off.

Lichfield, Tamworth and Burton sit on the edge of other lists. A Derby firm on the Derby page may be closer than a Stoke firm. Ask. The licence still has to match the HSE row, wherever they drive from.

The six-month limit is per household. Taking two cars to two sites in the same week is still one household. The county can refuse the second load.

Newcastle-under-Lyme points at Leek and Stafford. The county still says five

Staffordshire County Council’s asbestos page says five recycling centres, 1pm to 3pm, without naming them all on that page. Newcastle-under-Lyme names Leek and Stafford as the nearest that take it. Stafford Borough points at St Albans Road in Stafford for small amounts of asbestos cement. Read the county page on the morning you go. Read the county page on the morning you go.

Lower House Farm at Baddesley Ensor is a Warwickshire site. Staffordshire’s page links it. It is not a Staffordshire household tip. Do not assume you can use it from a Staffordshire address without reading Warwickshire’s rules.

Getting a quote from a Staffordshire contractor

Ring anyone in the table. Those numbers come straight from the HSE register.

If you would rather describe the job and let licensed local firms come back to you, use the form. We pass it on. Say whether the sheets already fail the 3-foot rule.

If you are aiming at the 1pm–3pm window, read the county page that morning. Which five sites, and whether they are open that day, is their list not this one. Arrive with the sheets already wrapped. They will not wrap them for you on the pad.

A Potteries factory board job should never go in that window. Put “industrial board” or “garage sheets” on the form so the firm knows which quote to write.

Landlords in Stoke and Staffordshire should not use the 1pm–3pm household window as a portfolio dump. It is four sheets or four bags per household every six months. A street of terraces is a contractor job with a proper waste facility. If you manage factory conversions, say so on the form. That board is usually licensed work, not a recycling-centre afternoon.

Do not cut 8-foot sheets down to 3 foot. That is the mistake this county’s size limit produces. If they will not fit, they do not go to the tip. They go on the form as a contractor job.

Ask the firm whether they are quoting Stoke industrial board or Staffordshire garage sheets. Those invoices should not look the same. If they do, the quote is a guess.

Read the county asbestos page the morning you go. Site names and whether they are open that day change. This page will not keep a live list of the five.

If you manage a street of garage roofs, that is a contractor round, not four sheets every six months until the street is done. Put the number of roofs on the form.
