Found asbestos in Nottingham? Do this before you ring anyone

Nottingham’s housing gives asbestos plenty of places to hide. The Victorian terraces of Lenton, Sneinton, Radford and Forest Fields tend to carry it in later additions: textured ceiling coatings, floor tiles and the backing behind them, and boarding around fireplaces. The inter-war and post-war council estates and the tower blocks of the St Ann’s and the Meadows redevelopments are where the higher risk materials turn up, because insulating board and pipe lagging were normal building materials in that era. Two very different jobs, and the difference decides whether you legally need a licensed firm.

Every HSE licensed asbestos contractor covering Nottinghamshire

There are nine firms holding a licence here, spread across the city and the wider county from Nottingham itself out to Worksop. The trade association directory most people find first shows fewer than this, because a firm only appears there once it pays for membership. Neither list is wrong. One is just longer.

9 of the 9 hold a standard licence, and that is the type that covers removal. Every firm on this list holds a standard licence, which is the type that covers removal work.

Two things on the Nottinghamshire list worth knowing

  • This is not a big pool for a county this size. Expect to wait for the better ones, and expect firms from Derbyshire, South Yorkshire and Leicestershire to quote for Nottingham work as well. That is normal and often gets you a keener price.

Getting rid of small amounts in Nottingham

Nottingham City Council runs a disposal service for householders, but it describes it as a non-advice service, which means it will take the material off you and nothing more. It cannot help with testing, surveys, inspections or removal, and asbestos is not accepted at the ordinary recycling centres alongside your normal waste.

You have to book it in. The rules the council sets are specific, so read them before you load the car:

  • Book a slot on 0115 915 5555, Monday to Friday between 9am and 5pm. The disposal itself happens on a Saturday morning at a dedicated site, not at a normal tip visit.
  • Double-wrap it in strong 1000 gauge polythene and seal it with broad, strong tape such as duct tape, with every loose edge and corner secured.
  • Keep it to one car boot load, brought in a car or a small van up to 2.5 tonnes, in a single trip.

If you live outside the city boundary, in Mansfield, Newark, Worksop or the rest of Nottinghamshire, this is your county council’s job rather than the city’s, and the county does not accept asbestos at its recycling centres in the normal way. Check your own council’s booking route and whether it charges a fee before you turn up with it, because the arrangements and any charge differ from the city’s.

Where the East Midlands sits on mesothelioma

  • East Midlands: 53.1 deaths per million
  • Great Britain as a whole: 55.9

A little below the national figure. The regions at the top of the table are the shipbuilding ones, and Nottinghamshire’s industrial history is lace, textiles, coal and light engineering rather than shipyards.

That does not make it a low risk place to open up a ceiling. The HSE says the highest risk today sits with people who worked in the building trades while asbestos was still in use. The danger now is in housing stock, not in the old workplaces.

Asbestos removal in Nottingham: questions people ask

Will the council remove asbestos from my house?

No. Nottingham City Council runs a disposal service that takes the material off you once you have removed and wrapped it, but it does not identify, survey or remove asbestos. Removal is down to you or a contractor.

Can I take asbestos to the tip in Nottingham?

Not to a normal recycling centre visit. The city runs a separate booked service, on 0115 915 5555, with Saturday morning slots at a dedicated site, and the material has to be double-wrapped in 1000 gauge polythene first. County residents should check their own council’s arrangements.

How many licensed contractors are near me?

9 hold a current licence with a Nottinghamshire address. Firms based in Derbyshire, South Yorkshire and Leicestershire also work across Nottingham, so your real choice is wider than the table.
