Found asbestos in Chester? Do this before you ring anyone

Chester itself is mostly older housing, where asbestos turns up in later work rather than the original build: textured ceilings, floor tiles, boiler flues and garage roofs added in the sixties and seventies. The wider borough is a different story. Ellesmere Port and the industrial belt along the estuary carry a heavier legacy, and that is where the higher risk materials, insulating board and pipe lagging, are more common.

Every HSE licensed asbestos contractor covering Cheshire

There are ten firms holding a licence here. The trade association directory most people land on lists only the firms that pay for membership, so most licensed Cheshire firms never show up on it.

9 of the 10 hold a standard licence, and that is the type that covers removal. One firm here holds a scaffolding licence, not a removal one: Palmers Scaffolding UK Limited in Chester. A scaffolding licence covers putting up and taking down scaffold around asbestos work, not removing anything, so those are not who you ring about a garage roof.

Two things on the Cheshire list worth knowing

  • An address in Cheshire is not the same as covering all of Cheshire. The county runs from the Wirral boundary to the Peak District. A firm in Crewe may not want a small job in Chester. Ask before you get your hopes up on a price.

You cannot take asbestos to the tip in Chester

Cheshire West and Chester recycling centres do not accept asbestos. Not in small amounts, not double bagged, not at any site. The council’s own guidance says household waste recycling centres cannot take it, and tells residents to find a company licensed to remove and dispose of it instead.

So the do it yourself route that exists in Lancashire, Hampshire and most other counties simply is not available to you. Even one broken garage sheet has to go through a licensed firm or a registered waste carrier.

That has two consequences worth knowing before you get quotes. Removal and disposal are one job here, not two, so make sure any quote covers taking it away. And be wary of anyone offering to get rid of a small amount cheaply, because there is nowhere legitimate and free for them to put it.

Where the North West sits on mesothelioma

  • North West: 54.6 deaths per million
  • Great Britain as a whole: 55.9

Chester itself is not a heavy industry city, but the regional figure covers Merseyside, Manchester and industrial Cheshire, where chemicals and engineering used asbestos heavily.

For a householder here the relevant point is different. The HSE says the highest risk today is to people who worked in the building trades while asbestos was in use. Chester has a great deal of housing from the decades when asbestos cement, insulating board and textured coatings were standard, and that is where it turns up now.

What asbestos removal in Chester is likely to cost

Cheshire sits around the middle for labour rates, below the South East and broadly in line with the rest of the North West. Two local things add to a bill. There is no tip option, so disposal is always in the price. And the older streets inside the walls have restricted access and loading, which costs time.

Asbestos removal in Chester: questions people ask

Can I take asbestos to the tip in Chester?

No. Cheshire West and Chester recycling centres do not accept asbestos at all. It has to go through a licensed removal firm or a registered waste carrier.

What do I do with one broken sheet then?

The same as a large job, only smaller. A licensed firm or a registered carrier collects and disposes of it with the proper paperwork. Several firms will do small collections, so ask.

Someone offered to take it away cheap. Is that fine?

Ask where it is going and ask to see their waste carrier registration. There is nowhere in this borough to dispose of it free, so a very cheap collection usually means it ends up somewhere it should not, with your name on the paperwork.

How many licensed contractors are near me?

10 hold a current licence with a Cheshire address. Firms from Merseyside, Greater Manchester and North Wales work across this area too, so your real choice is wider than the table.

Getting a quote from a Chester contractor

Check that each quote states the licence number, confirms the waste is taken away and disposed of, includes a clearance certificate where one is needed, and says whether the price is fixed or an estimate. Disposal matters more here than anywhere, because you have no way of doing it yourself.

Firms in the neighbouring counties quote for this work routinely. If you want to widen the field, see the licensed contractors covering Stoke and Staffordshire.
