This page lists every firm the HSE currently licenses in Leicester and Leicestershire for asbestos removal. Leicester City Council will take cement-bonded asbestos at Freemen’s Common recycling centre, double wrapped in plastic, up to eight sheets a visit. Phone 0116 254 3568 before you go. Gypsum Close will not take it.

Current rules sit on Leicester’s recycling centres page. Leicestershire County Council is a different authority with different sites. If your bins are collected by the county, not the city, do not assume Freemen’s Common will take your sheets. Read the county waste page as well.

There are only 3 licensed firms on this HSE tag. That is a short list. Neighbouring cities have more. Those firms travel.

3 of the 3 hold a standard licence, which is the one that covers removal.

How to read the licensed contractor list for Leicestershire

  • Watch the expiry dates. None of the Leicestershire firms hold a licence expiring in the next 6 weeks.
  • Watch the type. Every firm on this list holds a standard licence, which is the type that covers removal work.

Ask for the licence number and match it to the table.

Freemen’s Common will. Gypsum Close will not

Eight cement-bonded sheets, double wrapped, city residents, phone first. That is Freemen’s Common. Gypsum Close refuses asbestos in any vehicle. Do not take it there and hope. Do not break sheets to stay under eight.

If you have more than eight sheets, or they will not come off whole, use a firm from the table, or a neighbouring city’s list.

Where asbestos turns up in Leicester houses

Terraces towards the universities, later suburbs, garage roofs, and old factory and warehouse board. Student HMOs being emptied between tenancies are a regular call. A textured ceiling in a four-person shared house is a private landlord job. The city recycling centre will not identify the material for you.

If you rent from the city council or a housing association, start with them. They survey their own stock.

Not every job needs a licensed firm

Eight cement sheets, off whole, wrapped, phoned in, can be a householder drop at Freemen’s Common. Insulating board, lagging, and anything broken is a contractor. If the work is licensed, ring a firm on the table. With only a few local licence-holders, get quotes from Derby, Nottingham and Birmingham as well.

How to check an asbestos licence yourself

Ask for the licence number and match it to the table. Search the same HSE register. If the number is missing, or the type is not Standard and the job is licensed removal, stop. A builder who “uses a licensed firm” is not the licence holder.

What asbestos removal costs in Leicester

Most domestic jobs in the UK land somewhere between £400 and £3,500. Eight sheets at Freemen’s Common is not a removal price. Get more than one quote, in writing, including firms from the neighbouring lists, and ask whether disposal sits inside the figure.

Live neighbouring lists: Derby, Nottingham, Birmingham.

Questions about asbestos removal in Leicester

I live in Loughborough / Hinckley. Is Freemen’s Common mine?

Those are often county, not city. Read Leicestershire County Council’s waste rules. This HSE table still covers firms filed under Leicester and Leicestershire.

Why are there only three firms?

That is how many the HSE currently files on this tag. Use the neighbouring lists as well.

A short local list is not a reason to stop ringing

Three HSE rows on this tag is thin coverage, not a closed shop. Derby, Nottingham and Birmingham pages on this site have longer tables. Those firms already work across the East Midlands. Get at least one quote from a neighbouring list as well as anyone local. Compare licence numbers as well as the price.

City and county waste rules split at the boundary. Freemen’s Common is Leicester City Council. A house in Oadby, Wigston or a Leicestershire village is often county. Phone 0116 254 3568 is the city number. Do not use it as a county booking line.

Student terraces being emptied in June and September are when this page gets used. A landlord who wants “the ceiling sorted before the next tenancy” still needs to know whether it is textured coating, tiles, or board. A photo is not a survey. A sample is.

Old factory and warehouse conversions around the city throw up insulating board. That is licensed work more often than eight garage sheets. Say “works conversion” when you ask for quotes, not “a house in Leicester”.

County sites are not Freemen’s Common

Leicestershire County Council takes cement-bonded asbestos at Coalville, Kibworth, Mountsorrel and Whetstone. You need an asbestos waste permit. Their published example charge is £10 a sheet. Limits on that permit include up to 30 cement-bonded sheets or bags, up to 10 lengths of guttering, down pipes or flues, and one water tank. No blue, brown or non-cement-bonded asbestos. Current rules and the permit sit on Leicestershire’s waste permit page and the charges page.

That is the county. Freemen’s Common is Leicester City Council: eight sheets, phone 0116 254 3568, no Gypsum Close. A house in Oadby, Wigston or a Leicestershire village is often county. Do not phone the city number for a county permit.

Getting a quote from a Leicester contractor

Ring anyone in the table. Those numbers come straight from the HSE register. Then ring a Derby or Nottingham firm as well. A short local list is not a reason to take the first number you hear.

If you would rather describe the job and let licensed local firms come back to you, use the form. We pass it on. Say city or county, and whether you already tried Freemen’s Common.

Phone Freemen’s Common on 0116 254 3568 only if you are a city resident with cement-bonded sheets, already wrapped, eight or fewer. Gypsum Close is the wrong site. County residents need the county page.

Because the local HSE list is short, put Derby and Nottingham on the same round of calls. A three-firm local list is not a market. Compare licence numbers on the quotes you get back.

Landlords of student terraces in Leicester should not treat Freemen’s Common as a June clear-out. Eight sheets a visit, city residents, cement-bonded, wrapped, phoned in. A whole house of ceilings is a survey and a contractor, including firms from Derby and Nottingham. Put “HMO turnaround” on the form if that is the job, so quotes are for the right amount of work.

Eight sheets is the city visit limit, not a target. If you have nine, it is a contractor, not two visits. Gypsum Close will not take the ninth sheet either.

If the local list is only three names, treat that as a reason to widen the search, not a reason to accept the first number. Derby and Nottingham are on this site for that.

City phone 0116 254 3568 is not a county booking line. County residents start on the county waste page.

A works conversion is not “a house in Leicester”. Put that on the form.

Student turnaround in June is still a survey if you do not know what the ceiling is. A photo in the form helps. A guess does not.
