This page lists every firm the HSE currently licenses in York and North Yorkshire for asbestos removal. City of York Council takes wrapped bonded asbestos at Hazel Court if there is space in the one secure container. Ring 01904 551551 first. They also run a bonded-asbestos collection for residents. Traders are refused.
Current rules sit on York’s disposing of asbestos page. Pieces have to be double wrapped in heavy-duty plastic. Bin liners and carrier bags are refused. The wrap does not have to be clear, but nothing can poke through. North Yorkshire Council is a different authority with different sites. Do not take York waste to a North Yorkshire tip without reading that council’s rules, and the other way round.
7 of the 7 hold a standard licence, which is the one that covers removal.

How to read the licensed contractor list for York
- Watch the expiry dates. None of the North Yorkshire firms hold a licence expiring in the next 6 weeks.
- Watch the type. Every firm on this list holds a standard licence, which is the type that covers removal work.
Ask for the licence number and match it to the table. A Harrogate or Scarborough firm on this list may still quote into York. Ask how far, and whether the price holds.
One container at Hazel Court
York’s page is blunt: there is only one secure asbestos container and space is not always available. That is why you ring 01904 551551 before you load the car. If they say no, do not drive there anyway. The collection service is the other household route, for bonded asbestos, and it is chargeable. They will not give the price over the phone. Traders who try to use Hazel Court are turned away. The council says that can also be a criminal offence.
Do not wrap it in bin bags. Do not turn up as a trader. This page will not tell you to break sheets to make them smaller.
Where asbestos turns up in York houses
Terraces inside the old city, later suburbs, garage roofs, and textured ceilings. Older lined cupboards and boiler stores throw up insulating board. That is not a Hazel Court bag job.
If you rent from the council or a housing association, start with them. They survey their own stock. North Yorkshire housing is a different landlord again.
Not every job needs a licensed firm
Bonded cement a householder can wrap and, if Hazel Court has space, drop off. Insulating board, lagging, and anything that is not bonded cement is a contractor. If the work is licensed, ring a firm on the table.
What asbestos removal costs in York
Most domestic jobs in the UK land somewhere between £400 and £3,500. Hazel Court is a household drop-off, not a removal price. The collection service is chargeable; get that figure from the council’s chargeable-waste list, not from memory. Contractor quotes should say whether disposal is included.
Leeds and Sheffield lists are next door: Leeds, Sheffield. Those firms travel.
Questions about asbestos removal in York
I live in Selby / Harrogate. Is Hazel Court mine?
Those are North Yorkshire. Read North Yorkshire Council’s waste rules. This table still includes firms the HSE files under York and North Yorkshire.
They said the container is full.
Do not leave it at the gate. Use the collection service or a firm from the table.
York is not North Yorkshire at the tip
City of York Council runs Hazel Court and the collection service. North Yorkshire Council runs a different set of household sites. A house in Haxby is not the same as a house in Malton. The HSE table on this page covers firms filed under both tags. The tip you can use does not.
Terraces inside the old city often have no rear access. That is what makes a garage-roof quote jump. Say if the only way out is through the house or down a snickelway. A suburban garage with a drive is a different job.
The collection service exists because some residents cannot get to Hazel Court, or the container is full. It is still householders only, bonded asbestos only, and chargeable. Get the current charge from the council’s own list. This page will not guess it.
York’s page tells residents to ring before they travel because the container fills up. Believe that. A wasted trip with wrapped sheets in the car is how people then look for a skip. Do not put it in a skip.
The collection is not a trader service
City of York Council will collect bonded asbestos from a householder if they cannot get to Hazel Court, or if the container is full. It is chargeable. They will not quote the price on the phone. Read their chargeable-waste list. Traders and landlords sending a van are still traders. The collection will not take that load.
York’s page tells you to soak large pieces before breaking them down to bring on site. This page will not tell you to break asbestos. If the pieces will not go in as they are, use a firm from the table.
Can I take York sheets to a North Yorkshire tip?
Not without reading North Yorkshire Council’s rules. They check. Hazel Court is City of York Council’s site.
Getting a quote from a York contractor
Ring anyone in the table. Those numbers come straight from the HSE register.
Ring 01904 551551 before you drive. If the container is full, use the collection service or a firm from the table. Do not leave wrapped sheets in the car for a week while you decide. Keep them dry and intact.
Say whether the house is inside the old city with no rear access. That one fact changes the quote more than the word York does.
Landlords in York should not send a tenant to Hazel Court with a car full of sheets. The site is for householders, space is limited, and traders are refused. A portfolio of terraces is a contractor job. If the house has no rear access, say so. That is the York fact that changes labour, not the postcode on the invoice.
North Yorkshire waste rules are a different page. If the bins say North Yorkshire, Hazel Court may not be yours even when the HSE table still lists a local firm. Read the council that collects the bins before you ring 01904 551551.
The collection service will not take trader waste even if you pay. A landlord sending a van is still a trader. Use a firm from the table.
One secure container is not a rumour. York’s own page says space is not always available. Believe it and ring first.
Do not take York sheets to a North Yorkshire site without reading that council’s rules. They check.
Bin liners and carrier bags are refused at Hazel Court. Heavy-duty wrap, nothing poking through. If you do not have that, you do not have a drop-off. Ring first anyway.
