This page lists every firm the HSE currently licenses in Cardiff and South Glamorgan for asbestos removal. Cardiff Council will take a maximum of two asbestos sacks to Bessemer Close recycling centre. You have to book on 029 2087 2087. They will not test the material and they will not take it off the building.
Current rules sit on Cardiff’s recycling centres page. Check that page before you go. Two sacks is a small household drop-off. A garage roof is usually more than that. A trader cannot use Bessemer Close for this.

4 of the 5 hold a standard licence, which is the one that covers removal.

How to read the licensed contractor list for Cardiff
- Watch the expiry dates. None of the South Glamorgan firms hold a licence expiring in the next 6 weeks.
- Watch the type. One firm here holds a scaffolding licence, not a removal one: MAC Scaffolding (Cardiff) Ltd in Cardiff. A scaffolding licence covers putting up and taking down scaffold around asbestos work, not removing anything, so those are not who you ring about a garage roof.
Ask for the licence number and match it to the table.
Two sacks is not a garage roof
Bessemer Close will take two sacks if you book. That is wrapped household waste, not a contractor emptying a roof. If you have more than two sacks, or you cannot get the material off whole, use a firm from the table. The council will not identify what you have brought. If you are not sure it is cement-bonded, do not take it there to find out.
Do not break sheets to make them fit the sack limit. Do not sweep the dust. Do not put them in a general skip.
Where asbestos turns up in Cardiff houses
Terrace and semi-detached stock, later kitchens, garage roofs and textured ceilings are the usual domestic finds. Insulating board around a boiler or in a cupboard is a different material and Bessemer Close is the wrong place for it.
If you rent from Cardiff Council, start with them. They have an asbestos checker for council tenants and an asbestos helpline on 029 2087 2087. The council says it has carried out around 12,000 domestic surveys of its own stock. That checker is their housing, not a private house.
Private landlords in Cardiff still need their own survey before works. The checker will not cover a buy-to-let terrace in Splott or a house in Canton. If you are about to strip a kitchen or a bathroom in a house built before 2000, get a refurbishment survey, not a guess from the colour of the tiles.
Bay windows, rear additions and garage conversions in Cardiff terraces are where old board and tiles get found during works. Tell the contractor which room and which decade the house is, as far as you know it. A quote for “some tiles” without a room is not a quote you can compare.
Not every job needs a licensed firm
A couple of cement-bonded items a householder can wrap and book into Bessemer Close, if the council will still accept them. A roof, insulating board, or anything broken is a contractor job. If the work is licensed, ring a firm on the table, not a general builder.
Wales has the lowest mesothelioma rate in Britain
- Wales: 43.8 deaths per million
- Great Britain as a whole: 55.9
Lower than England at 57.5 and Scotland at 47.7. That reflects an industrial history built on coal and steel rather than shipbuilding, which is the industry that drives the highest rates.

What asbestos removal costs in Cardiff
Hampshire is the nearest live English list if you want a wider net of firms that sometimes quote into South Wales: Hampshire. Ask how far they travel.
South Glamorgan is the HSE tag, not the council map
The Vale of Glamorgan and Newport are next door. They are not automatically on this table. A Penarth garage roof may still be quoted by a Cardiff firm; ask. Do not assume Bessemer Close will take Vale waste. That site is Cardiff Council’s.
A terrace in Grangetown and a 1930s semi in Cyncoed are different access jobs. Say the house type and whether the material is a garage roof, a ceiling, or insulating board. That is what moves the price.
Roath, Plasnewydd and Cathays have a lot of student HMOs. Landlords doing a turnaround between tenancies are the other people who open this page. A textured ceiling in a four-person shared house is still a private job. The council checker does not cover it. A managing agent who asks for “a quick look” is still appointing the contractor. Get the licence number on the appointment email. If they cannot give one, they are not the firm on this table. Check the number against the row before they attend.
Questions about asbestos removal in Cardiff
I am a council tenant. Do I use this list?
Start with the council asbestos checker and the helpline. The list on this page is for private owners, landlords and agents.
Can I take a whole garage roof to Bessemer Close?
The published limit is two sacks. A roof is usually more. Ring 029 2087 2087 and read the council page. If they will not take it, use the table.
What do the two sacks have to look like?
Follow Cardiff’s current packaging rules on the recycling-centres page, not a guess. If the wrapping is wrong they will refuse it. They will not wrap it for you on site.
I live in Barry or Penarth. Is this my page?
Those addresses are often Vale of Glamorgan. The HSE table here is Cardiff and South Glamorgan firms. A Cardiff firm may still quote. Bessemer Close is Cardiff Council’s site. Read the Vale’s own waste rules for a drop-off.
Council tenants have a checker. Private houses do not
Cardiff Council’s asbestos checker and helpline on 029 2087 2087 are for their own stock. They say they have carried out around 12,000 domestic surveys of council homes. A buy-to-let terrace in Splott or a house in Canton is not on that checker. Private landlords still need their own survey before they strip a kitchen or a bathroom in a house built before 2000.
Getting a quote from a Cardiff contractor
Ring anyone in the table. Those numbers come straight from the HSE register.
Say whether it is a garage roof, a ceiling, a kitchen, or insulating board. Say whether you already tried Bessemer Close and were turned away. A form that only says “asbestos in Cardiff” is not enough to quote. If a survey already names the material, put that in the form so firms are not quoting a sample you already paid for.
